Zürich is expensive (25 September 2024)

Looking down on the outlet from Zürichsee

Bev had booked one hour walk around Zürich.  Initially we were going to take the train but I almost had a heart attack when I found out that a return ticket was around $AU80.  Then our host kindly offered to take us into the city and meet us for lunch after the walk.

The walk was quite short and gave us a brief history of the city which had been variously settled by the Celts, the Romans and later tribes that came from Germany.  She showed us part of a dig under a Freemason building where the various civilisations had built.  Later the area was declared to be one where no building could be placed and it is now full of Linden Trees and not surprisingly call Lindenplatz.  It has a great view over the river which flows from the Zürichsee.

On our walk we went past a bakery and tasted one of the best pieces of Tarte au Citron that I have had.  The pastry was thin and  melt in the mouth.  The filling was perfect, delicate and not too sweet.

The Cycling World Championships are currently being held in Zürich and we sat down in an area where there was a big screen showing the racing although there was none on at the time.  I even got interviewed about what I thought of the cycling.  Not that I could say much given it was just coincidence that I was there.

We met our hosts Mary and William at the Hauptbahnhof which was a short cut to an area near the station where there was a vegetarian buffet style restaurant.  Payment was based on the weight of the food which turned out to be very good.

Apparently the clock face is larger than Big Ben
