Taking the train to Prague (21 September 2024)
First views of Prague from near our apartment
Our train
was due to leave close to midday. Our morning was therefore spent getting the
apartment back into order so the Commandant would give us a good rating. Then it was a walk to the tram stop. We arrived at the Hauptbahnhof in good time
to figure out from what station our train would leave. Finally the platform was identified.
The train left on time and we had a largely uneventful journey southeast to the Czech Republic. We had been told that we should visit Dresden by a couple we had met at the French Restaurant. The train took us through Dresden on the way to Czechia and from a distance it did look quite interesting. It was one of the number of cities that was devastated by Allied bombing.
The train followed the Vltava river I think all the way to Prague wending its way through a very pretty valley for a couple of hours before we arrived.
As always the next challenge on arriving is finding our way to our accommodation. I found an information place and the advisor suggested a different route to what had been recommended. Apparently, the route that had been suggested was very steep. Later ,during our stay, we took that route and found it would have been rather a challenge as it included a large number of steps.
The apartment was very good. It was a relatively new build and very well appointed. Even better, there was an Italian Restaurant across the road from us and as our arrival was much later than expected we decided to eat there that night.
It turned out to be a very good choice. The food was authentically Italian and delicious. I had Octopus and Bev had some very good ravioli. While we were there a very overweight man appeared and was ushered to a table near us. A bit later more men appeared which led to Bev and I speculating that they might be a mafia type group there to intimidate the owner.
